About the artist:

I grew up in Southern California in the 1960s. I lived in Sepulveda in the San Fernando Valley. Usual hangouts were Van Nuys Blvd., The Northridge shopping center, Alpha Beta, the library, or the tropical fish store. My name used to be Valerie Hooper.

I became interested in art when I was about 10 years old. I would draw pictures of Fred Flintstone with big, strong-smelling markers that would squeak when you drew with them. Those were the kind of markers they don't let kids get ahold of anymore, but back then we didn't know they gave off noxious fumes.

In elementary school, I learned how to draw hippos and rabbits. I would give my third-grade classmates a demonstration on how to draw a duck by starting with a question mark. I also loved to do paint-by-numbers in oils when I was around 12.

As a teen, I would paint with acrylics or oils, usually something weird like a Jaws' shark or something cute like Snoopy. In junior high (Sepulveda middle school), I loved art class.

I took many years off from painting, but I did paint a little bit with the encouragement of my mother, Amelia, and art lessons from Jim Gaines (San Fernando Valley) and Joseph Vella (Orange County).

When I was about 28, I attended Cypress College in California, and earned an AA in Fine Arts. My favorite teachers there were Betty Disney and Jill Valevanis.

That's enough about me! I hope you like my art.
---Valerie
